INTRODUCTION

In the summer term of 2021, Batley Girls’ High School and Field Lane Junior, Nursery and Infant School partnered with the University of Leeds to deliver an educational initiative designed to support children’s understanding of the role of science in society.

The Imaginarium takes you on a journey of discovery through art and science, showcasing the creative responses and reflections produced by years 5, 6 and 8.

Welcome to a world where art and science collide.

THE WORLD OF MICROORGANISMS

Students in years 5, 6 and 8 have been exploring the wonderful world of microorganisms through playful experimentation, observation, making and storytelling.

Modeling Microbes

Horrible Hands

A hand washing experiment using disclosing lotion, formulated to be the same size as bacteria. Under an ultra-violet light, students examine how well they have washed their hands.

Poliovirus

Students have been learning about the dynamics of virus structure and function through a mechanical model of poliovirus. They’ve made paper virus nets to explore the shape of the virus capsid.

Coronavirus

Year 5 and 6 have been exploring the structure of coronavirus, creating the capsid shell and genomic material encased inside.
